The general rule of thumb is that when setting a post into the ground is the height required above the ground should be divided by 3 and this figure is the depth of the hole. For example, if erecting a 1800mm (6 feet) high fence the posts need to be 1800mm (6 feet) above the ground. Therefore the depth of the hole required is 600mm (2 feet).
